Abstract The cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 was developed by the pedigree method, from the recombination of the coffee tree H 2077-2-5-46, of the Catuaí Vermelho germplasm, with accession IAC 1110-8, from the exotic cultivar BA10. Cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 is high-yielding, resistant to coffee leaf rust and tolerant to drought.

Abstract Cultivar IAC Obatã 4739 was derived from a cross between coffee tree IAC 1669-20-1 and cultivar Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62. It is short and high-yielding, rust-resistant, has large and yellow fruits, medium to late maturation, excellent cup quality, and responds effectively to irrigation.

Abstract IAC 125 RN was derived from a cross between the coffee cultivar Villa Sarchí and the Hibrido de Timor CIFC 832/2. The coffee trees are short and resistant to races 1 and 2 of the nematode Meloidogyne exigua and to all races of coffee rust, Hemileia vastatrix, present in Brazil. Brazil.

Foram comparadas as características bioquímicas das sementes de um cafeeiro Arabica naturalmente descafeinado (AC1), descoberto em 2004, com aquelas da cultivar Mundo Novo (MN), amplamente cultivada no Brasil. Apesar de terem sido observadas diferenças durante o desenvolvimento das sementes, os conteúdos de aminoácidos, ácidos orgânicos, ácidos clorogênicos, açúcares solúveis e trigonelina foram similares nas sementes de frutos maduros de AC1 e MN. Sementes de AC1 acumularam teobromina, e a cafeína estava praticamente ausente. Experimentos com o fornecimento de [2-14C] adenina e análises enzimáticas de teobromina sintase e cafeína sintase nas sementes de AC1 confirmaram que, assim como em folhas, a síntese de cafeína é bloqueada na metilação de teobromina a cafeína. A qualidade final da bebida de AC1 foi similar a de MN.

We compared the biochemical characteristics of the beans of a naturally decaffeinated Arabica coffee (AC1) discovered in 2004 with those of the widely grown Brazilian Arabica cultivar "Mundo Novo" (MN). Although we observed differences during fruit development, the contents of amino acids, organic acids, chlorogenic acids, soluble sugars and trigonelline were similar in the ripe fruits of AC1 and MN. AC1 beans accumulated theobromine, and caffeine was almost entirely absent. Tests on the supply of [2-14C] adenine and enzymatic analysis of theobromine synthase and caffeine synthase in the endosperm of AC1 confirmed that, as in the leaves, caffeine synthesis is blocked during the methylation of theobromine to caffeine. The quality of the final coffee beverage obtained from AC1 was similar to that of MN.

In this work, we studied the biosynthesis of caffeine by examining the expression of genes involved in this biosynthetic pathway in coffee fruits containing normal or low levels of this substance. The amplification of gene-specific transcripts during fruit development revealed that low-caffeine fruits had a lower expression of the theobromine synthase and caffeine synthase genes and also contained an extra transcript of the caffeine synthase gene. This extra transcript contained only part of exon 1 and all of exon 3. The sequence of the mutant caffeine synthase gene revealed the substitution of isoleucine for valine in the enzyme active site that probably interfered with enzymatic activity. These findings indicate that the absence of caffeine in these mutants probably resulted from a combination of transcriptional regulation and the presence of mutations in the caffeine synthase amino acid sequence.

Estudou-se a divergência genética de 21 progênies de meios-irmãos - 19 do grupo Congolês e duas do grupo Guineano - de introduções do germoplasma de café robusta (Coffea canephora) do IAC. O estudo baseou-se em análises multivariadas de 14 características morfo-agronômicas, com o propósito de selecionar as progênies mais divergentes, visando à definição de população-base para posterior seleção e produção de híbridos. Avaliou-se também a importância das características discriminantes para análises de divergência, visando ao descarte das variáveis, segundo suas contribuições relativas. O experimento foi plantado e desenvolvido em campo experimental localizado no Pólo Regional do Nordeste Paulista, Mococa (SP), em blocos casualizados, com 21 tratamentos e 24 repetições. O agrupamento dos genótipos foi realizado com base nos métodos de Tocher e UPGMA. A matriz de dissimilaridade genética foi obtida por meio da distância generalizada de Mahalanobis, que serviu de base para a formação dos grupos. Os métodos empregados foram eficientes em detectar ampla variabilidade genética entre as progênies avaliadas. Vários grupos dissimilares foram identificados. As progênies IAC 2262, IAC 2290, IAC 2286, IAC 2292 e IAC 2291 são indicadas para compor programas de intercruzamentos, por terem sido consideradas as mais promissoras na obtenção de populações segregantes ou híbridos heteróticos. As características que menos contribuíram para a divergência genética foram, hierarquicamente: diâmetro da copa antes da poda, altura da planta antes da poda e área foliar.

It was studied genetic divergence of 21 half-sib progenies, being 19 of the Congolês group and two of the Guineano group, introductions of germoplasma robust (Coffea canephora), based in 14 morpho-agronomic traits and multivariate procedures. It's aims to select the lineages most divergent for definition of population-base for posterior reciprocal recurrent selection and production of hybrids. The importance of the traits for divergence was, also, evaluated by the sequential discards the variables, according its relative contributions. The trial was carry out in an experimental field located in the Pólo Regional do Nordeste Paulista, Mococa-SP, using randomized blocks with 21 treatments and 24 replicates. The datas were analyzed by Tocher and UPGMA methods. The matrix of genetic divergence was gotten on the generalized Mahalanobis distance that it served of base for the formation of the groups. The employed methods had been efficient in detecting ample genetic variability between the evaluated progenies. Some groups of similarity had been identified. The IAC 2262, IAC 2290, IAC 2286, IAC 2292 and IAC 2291 progenies are indicated to compose programs of intercrosses, being considered the most promising in the attainment of segregantes populations or hybrid heterotics. The characteristics that had less contributed for the genetic divergence had been: canopy diameter before pruning, plant height before pruning and leaf area.

Com o objetivo de ampliar a diversidade genética da cultivar Mundo Novo, progênies S1 de 92 novas plantas matrizes, selecionadas em 1952, no município de Urupês (SP), foram estudadas em experimento instalado no Centro Experimental do Instituto Agronômico, em Campinas, utilizando-se como testemunhas 12 progênies S2 de Mundo Novo, seis de Bourbon Amarelo e sete de Bourbon Vermelho. O experimento foi delineado em blocos ao acaso com 21 repetições, parcelas de uma única cova e uma planta por cova, tendo sido realizadas colheitas consecutivas durante 33 anos. Foram mensuradas também as seguintes variáveis: índice de avaliação visual, precocidade de maturação dos frutos, porcentagem de sementes dos tipos chato, moca e concha e tamanho das sementes mediante determinação da peneira média. Diferenças significativas foram verificadas na produção dentro e entre grupos de Mundo Novo S1, Mundo Novo S2, Bourbon Amarelo e Bourbon Vermelho, sendo a média de produção das progênies S1, 6% superior à do grupo Mundo Novo S2. Foram observadas nas progênies de Mundo Novo S1 e S2, respectivamente, produtividade 39% e 30% superior à do Bourbon Amarelo e 112% e 99%, respectivamente, à do Bourbon Vermelho. Entre as 30 progênies mais produtivas, 4 pertencem à geração S2 e as restantes à geração S1 de Mundo Novo, indicando a eficiência da primeira seleção realizada em 1943. De modo geral, verificaram-se nas melhores progênies da cultivar Mundo Novo maturação média, sendo CP447, a mais precoce e CP502, a mais tardia. Apenas a progênie CP474 conseguiu peneira média superior às demais. Com o presente trabalho, concluiu-se que as progênies da cultivar Mundo Novo têm ótima capacidade produtiva, boa longevidade e excelente rusticidade. As novas seleções evidenciaram ainda mais o valor dessa cultivar, sendo uma das mais produtivas que se conhece em C. arabica.

Coffea arabica L. cv. Mundo Novo is the most outstanding coffee cultivars studied at the Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, State of São Paulo. Besides its rusticity, this cultivar has showed high yield capacity in all Brazilian coffee growing areas. In order to further diversify the Mundo Novo genetic background, new selection of mother trees was undertaken, in 1952, in six sites where former selections were made in Urupês, SP. Four groups of coffee progenies were planted to be compared at the Central Experimental Station, in Campinas, SP: 92 new selections (S1), 12 progenies of selected Mundo Novo (S2), 6 selected progenies of Bourbon Amarelo and 7 progenies of Bourbon Vermelho cultivars of C. arabica. The 117 progenies were planted in a randomized block design, with one-plant plots and 21 replications. Yield data were collected from individual plants during 33 consecutive annual harvests, from 1955 to 1987. Prior to the 1985 harvest, observations were made on the shape of plants, vegetative vigor (IAV index, 1 to 10 points varying from the worst to the best, respectively), fruit ripening (1 point for early, 3 for medium and 5 for late ripening, respectively), seed characteristics, such as flat beans, peaberry and elephant beans, and seed size. Significative differences were found in the yield inside and between progenies groups - Mundo Novo S1, Mundo Novo S2, Bourbon Amarelo and Bourbon Vermelho. The average yield of Mundo Novo S1 was 6% superior to the of Mundo Novo S2, and both groups of Mundo Novo S1 and S2 were more productive than Bourbon Amarelo (39 and 30%) and the progenies of Bourbon Vermelho (112 and 99%), respectively. Among the 30 highest Mundo Novo yield progenies, 4 belong to S2 and 26 to S1, Mundo Novo progenies, indicating the efficiency of the selection of S1 progenies. The highest yield Mundo Novo progenies have medium maturation. However individual plants in the progenies were classified as early, medium or late maturing plants. The Mundo Novo progeny CP447 gave larger number of plants with early fruit ripening and CP502 gave the highest number of late plants. All the best Mundo Novo progenies presented normal flat, peaberry and elephant beans seed percentages and seed size. The progeny CP474 gave several plants with larger seeds. The highest yield S2 Mundo Novo progenies such as P388-17, MP376-4 and the S1 CP502, CP515, CP474, CP447, CP501, CP543, CP475, CP464 and CP441 have already been multiplied in seed plots and are being extensively planted in all coffee regions of Brazil.

O banco de germoplasma de café do Instituto Agronômico de Campinas contém grande número de introduções de Coffea arabica provenientes da Etiópia, considerada centro de diversidade genética desta espécie. A avaliação dos teores de cafeína nas sementes de 99 progênies revelou a presença de variabilidade entre e dentro das progênies, de acordo com a região de origem das introduções. Entre as 68 progênies da região de Kaffa encontraram-se valores de cafeína entre 0.46 e 2.82% (média 1.18%) e entre as 22 progênies de Illubabor obtiveram-se plantas cujos teores de cafeína variaram de 0.42 a 2.90% (média 1.10%). A variabilidade aqui relatada poderá ser explorada na produção de uma variedade de café com baixos teores de cafeína nas sementes.

The coffee germplasm bank of the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas has many Coffea arabica accessions from Ethiopia, which is considered the primary center of genetic diversity in coffee plants. An evaluation of the caffeine content of beans from 99 progenies revealed intra- and inter-progeny variability. In 68 progenies from the Kaffa region we found caffeine values in the range 0.46-2.82% (mean 1.18%), and in 22 progenies from Illubabor region these values ranged from 0.42 to 2.90% (mean 1.10%). This variability could be exploited in a breeding program aimed at producing beans with low-caffeine content.

Variedades e espécies de café (Coffea) que diferem quanto ao número de cromossomos tiveram o conteúdo de cafeína determinado em suas folhas. Para as variedades "Angustifolia", "Caturra" e "Icatu" de Coffea arabica foi observada redução no teor de cafeína de folhas haplóides (2n = 22) em relação a tetraplóides (2n = 44). Cafeína na forma tetraplóide da var. "Angustifolia" foi reduzida em 50% quando comparada com a forma haplóide. Redução de cafeína também foi observada em folhas de C. canephora var. "Kouilou" quando o número de cromossomos aumentou (2n = 22 ® 2n = 44). Neste caso, a cafeína nas folhas do genótipo diplóide foi cerca de quatro vezes maior que no tetraplóide. Por outro lado, foi observado aumento desse alcalóide quando o número de cromossomos foi duplicado em C. canephora var. "Robusta".

Several species of Coffea and varieties of C. arabica differing in chromosome number had their caffeine content determined in the leaves. For Coffea arabica var. "Angustifolia", var. "Caturra" and var. "Icatu", it was observed caffeine decrease from the haploid (2n = 22) to tetraploid leaves (2n = 44). Caffeine in the tetraploid "Angustifolia" was decreased by 50% when compared to the haploid. Caffeine reduction was also observed in leaves of C. canephora var. "Kouilou" as chromosome number was increased (2n = 22 ® 2n = 44). In this case, caffeine in the leaves of the diploid genotype was close to 4 times higher than in the tetraploid. On the other hand it was observed an increase of the alkaloid when the chromosome number was doubled in the C. canephora var. "Robusta".

A ferrugem alaranjada das folhas (Hemileia vastatrix Berk. & Br.) é a principal moléstia do cafeeiro (Coffea arabica) no Brasil. Numerosos híbridos portadores de fatores genéticos que conferem resistência às raças desse fungo foram sintetizados e testados no Centro de Investigação das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro (CIFC) em Oeiras, Portugal. Dentre esses híbridos, destacam-se os derivados do cruzamento entre as variedades Caturra Vermelho x Híbrido de Timor (CV x HT) e Vila Sarchi x Híbrido de Timor (VS x HT). A partir de 1968, progênies de Caturra Vermelho x Híbrido de Timor e Vila Sarchi x Híbrido de Timor foram enviadas pelo CIFC ao Instituto Agronômico e, posteriormente, a vários outros centros experimentais para fins de seleção. Em 1982, instalou-se no Centro Experimental de Campinas um experimento (EP299), contendo 30 progênies de CV x HT, 12 de VS x HT e 15 de `Catuaí', sendo 9 de `Catuaí Amarelo' e 6 de `Catuaí Vermelho'. Nenhum tratamento fitossanitário foi feito para controlar o agente da ferrugem. O mate-rial foi avaliado quanto à produção, colhendo-se as plantas individualmente em 1984-89, e quanto ao aspecto vegetativo associado à produção, maturação dos frutos, altura e diâmetro da copa e incidência da ferrugem. A progênie de Catuaí Vermelho LCH2077-2-5-81-2 foi utilizada como testemunha. Verificou-se a existência de alta correlação positiva entre todas as variáveis estudadas. Os tratamentos puderam ser classificados em dois grupos, segundo a análise em componentes principais (ACP). O primeiro grupo é representado pelas linhagens dos cultivares Catuaí Vermelho e Catuaí Amarelo e o segundo grupo, pelos derivados de CV x HT e VS x HT. As plantas pertencentes ao primeiro grupo são mais produtivas, têm maior índice de avaliação visual (IAV), são mais tardias e suscetíveis ao agente da ferrugem, são mais altas e apresentam maior diâmetro da copa do que as do segundo grupo. Material bastante promissor foi observado na população C2591-5 derivada de CV x HT, que além de produtivo apresenta resistência ao agente da ferrugem.

Coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix Berk.& Br.) is the main coffee disease in State of São Paulo, Brazil. Hybrids of selected resistant coffee plants and short sized commercial Coffea arabica cultivars, as Caturra Vermelho and Vila Sarchi, originally developed at the CIFC, Oeiras, Portugal, have been selected for rust resistance and high yield in many experimental coffee centers in Brazil. This paper reports a comparative study of the hybrids selected at the Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, São Paulo State, with the most promising progenies developed in the States of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Paraná. An experimental trial, EP299, was established in Campinas in 1982 in a randomized block design with seven replications, with 30 progenies of the hybrid Caturra Vermelho x Híbrido de Timor (CV x HT), 12 of Vila Sarchi x Híbrido de Timor (VS x HT), and 15 of `Catuaí', in plots of two hills and a single plant per hill. Catuaí progeny, CH2077-2-5-81-2, without chemical treatment against rust disease, was used as control. Results of variance analysis indicated differences in the total yield (1984-1989) of the progenies. Among the three highest yielding progenies, two were from Catuaí and one from CV x HT. The results showed that the average of the Visual Evaluation Index was higher for the Catuaí progenies, however, plants with good vegetative aspect could also be found among the highest yielding progenies of CV x HT and VS x HT. The average value for fruit ripening indicated that the CV x HT and VS x HT progenies present early maturation than Catuaí. In relation to rust infection there were homozygous progenies for resistance in CV x HT and VS x HT. Catuaí progenies were rust susceptible. High positive correlation was observed among the variables studied. It was possible to classify the treatments in two groups according to a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The first one is represented by the Catuaí Vermelho and Catuaí Amarelo, and the second, by plants derived from CV x HT and VS x HT. In the former group, plants were more productive, with higher Visual Evaluation Index (IAV), late fruit ripening, susceptible to the leaf rust disease agent, taller and with higher canopy diameter than in the second one. Highly promising high yield plants were observed in the C2591-5 population, derived from CV x HT, that exhibited also resistance to coffee rust disease.

Clones de cana-de-açúcar, provenientes de hibridações realizadas em Camamu (BA), em 1982, foram avaliados em um ensaio em terra roxa estruturada, na Usina da Barra, em Barra Bonita (SP). No ensaio, instalado em janeiro de 1987, utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, sendo as análises estatísticas feitas com dados médios de quatro cortes. Avaliaram-se os parâmetros: produtividade de cana e açúcar, número de colmos por 10 m, massa de um colmo, teor de sacarose (pol % cana) e de fibra e intensidade de florescimento. Além disso, estudou-se a curva de maturação em cana-planta e primeira soca. Considerando-se essas características em relação às variedades CB47-355, IAC67-112, NA56-79 e SP71-1406, utilizadas como padrões, os clones IAC82-3092 e IAC82-3258 revelaram-se promissores para o estudo de manejo varietal no Estado de São Paulo. O segundo corte e a média dos dois primeiros apresentaram os melhores resultados na seleção de clones.

Sugarcane clones obtained from crosses made in 1982 in Camamu, State of Bahia, were evaluated in a trial carried out in a "terra roxa estruturada" at da Barra Mill, Barra Bonita, State of São Paulo. The trial started in January, 1987, using a randomized complete block design with four replications. Statistical analysis for cane and sugar yield (t/ha) and sugar content (pol % cane), were performed with four harvest means. Data or number and weight of stalks, flowering intensity and fibre % cane, are presented in comparison with four control varieties: CB47-355, IAC67-112, NA56-79 and SP71-1406. The clones IAC82-3092 and IAC82-3258 showed promising results and in condition to be included in the varietal management studies for the State of São Paulo. Selection made on second harvest or two first harvests mean showed the best results.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar os danos causados por Meloidogyne exigua e M. incognita raça 1 a mudas de cafeeiros (Coffea spp.) Coffea arabica cv. Mundo Novo (LCP 515-20) e de C. canephora cv. Robusta (C 2258). O ensaio foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação, em vasos de um litro, contendo uma plântula cada um. Aos vinte dias após o transplante, as plântulas foram inoculadas separadamente com 0, 2.000, 4.000 e 8.000 ovos de cada nematóide. As populações dos parasitos nas raízes e alguns parâmetros de crescimento das plantas foram avaliados aos 150 dias da inoculação. Verificou-se que M. incognita raça 1 foi mais patogênica que M. exigua ao cultivar Mundo Novo. O cafeeiro C 2258 comportou-se como hospedeiro não eficiente (FR < 1) de M. incognita raça 1, embora o crescimento das plantas tenha sido significativamente reduzido. M. exigua mostrou-se incapaz de parasitar o cafeeiro C 2258.

In order to evaluate the damage caused by Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and M. exigua to C. arabica cv. Mundo Novo and C. canephora cv. Robusta (C 2258) an experiment was established under greenhouse conditions, with 0, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 eggs as inicial inoculum, in a completely randomized design with one plant per plot. The plants were inoculated 20 days after transplanting and nematode population and some growth parameters were evaluated 150 days later. M. incognita race 1 showed to be more pathogenic to 'Mundo Novo' than M. exigua. The selection C 2258 was not an efficient host for M. incognita race 1, although reproduction occurred and significant reduction in the shoot dry weight of the inoculated plants was determined; M. exigua did not infect this cultivar.

Sete clones obtidos em projeto de melhoramento iniciado em 1980 no Instituto Agronômico foram testados em quatro locais na região de Jaú (SP), de 1987 a 1990. Os clones foram comparados com as testemunhas NA56-79, IAC67-112, IAC70-22, SP70-1143 e SP71-1406, em ensaios em blocos ao acaso, nos quais se avaliaram os caracteres agroindustriais, em média, de três cortes. Em produtividade agrícola, cinco clones foram superiores a NA56-79, a variedade de menor produtividade entre as testemunhas, enquanto, em teor de açúcar, todos os sete clones foram inferiores às testemunhas. Quanto à produção de pol por hectare, o clone IAC80-3062 se equiparou às quatro melhores testemunhas e foi superior à NA56-79. Sendo este um clone de teor médio de açúcar, pode-se considerá-lo uma opção de cultivo para a região de Jaú, com bons rendimentos de açúcar por área no final de safra, em solos de média fertilidade.

Seven sugarcane clones obtained in crosses made in 1980 were tested in four locations and two Oxisol soils at Jaú region. The commercial varieties NA56-79, IAC67-112, IAC70-22, SP70-1143 and SP71-1406 were used as controls in trials planted in randomized blocks. The genotipes were evaluated in three harvestings, from plant cane trough second ratoon. The following parameters were considered: cane and sugar yield, fiber% and pol% cane. All clones showed inferior in sugar content than the controls, but five of them showed at least better performance in cane yield than var. NA56-79 which acted as the worst control for this character. The clone IAC80-3062, showed better sugar productions than NA56-79. This clone can be recommended as a late-of-season variety for the region.

Encontrou-se, anos atrás, em uma lavoura de Coffea arabica (2n = 44), uma forma de café bastante distinta das demais. Inicialmente, julgou-se tratar de um cafeeiro autotetraplóide de C. liberica (2n = 22) ou de C. dewevrei (2n = 22). Estudos morfológicos e citológicos de tal cafeeiro, denominado Piatã (prefixo C387 da Seção de Genética do IAC), assim como de seus descendentes, indicaram tratar-se, provavelmente, de um híbrido natural derivado da união de um gameta normal de C. arabica e de um não reduzido de C. dewevrei. No presente trabalho, os estudos dos padrões eletroforéticos das enzimas PGI, PGM e ADH do endosperma de sementes confirmaram a origem interespecífica do café Piatã. A combinação de alelos dessas enzimas é distinta e específica para C. dewevrei e C. arabica e tais alelos segregam nas sementes do cafeeiro Piatã. O estudo das isoenzimas das sementes mostram também que, ao contrário do que se pensava, o café Piatã não é auto-incompatível, sendo freqüente a autofecundação. Análises semelhantes, além de úteis na identificação de outros híbridos naturais entre espécies de Coffea, serão de grande valia nos trabalhos básicos de genética, evolução e melhoramento do cafeeiro, nos quais importa conhecer a origem, constituição genética e biologia da reprodução das plantas.

Years ago it was found in a field of Coffea arabica (2n = 44) a coffee tree different from any other known so far. Initially it was thought to be an autotetraploid either of C. liberica (2n = 22) or of C. dewevrei (2n = 22). Morphological and cytological studies of this tree and its progeny, designated by the prefix C387 of the Department of Genetics, IAC and named Piatã, indicated that it was probably a natural hybrid originated from the fusion of a normal gamete (n = 22) of C. arabica and an unreduced gamete (2n = 22) of C. dewevrei. In the present study the isoenzyme banding patterns for the enzymes PGI, PGM and ADH of the seeds endosperm of Piatã confirmed its interspecific origin. The alleles of combination of C. dewevrei and C. arabica for the aforementioned isoenzymes is peculiar and distinct for these species, and such alleles segregate in the seeds of the Piatã. Isoenzymatic studies on seeds showed also that Piatã coffee is self-compatible, and not self-incompatible as it was believed. Indeed, autogamy is quite frequent in the Piatã coffee. Similar analyses may be useful for the identification of other natural hybrids among Coffea species. This could be of great value for genetic and evolution studies, and breeding of coffee, where the knowledge of the origin, genotype constitution and reproductive biology of the plants is important.

Testaram-se doze clones de cana-de-açúcar, obtidos de hibridações realizadas em Camamu (BA), em 1980 e 1981, em três ensaios na região de Ribeirão Preto (SP). Além do delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com seis repetições, efetuou-se a análise estatística com a média das três colheitas (1.°, 2.° e 3.° cortes), tomando as variedades SP70-1143, NA56-79 e IAC64-257 como testemunhas-padrão. Entre os caracteres agroindustriais avaliados estão: a produtividade de cana e açúcar, pol % cana, fibra %, intensidade de florescimento, índice de infestação de broca-do-colmo (Diatraea saccharalis) e a reação à ferrugem (Puccinia melanocephala). O melhor clone foi o IAC80-2094, indicado para início de safra, com boa produção e bom teor de fibra, mas de florescimento intenso e suscetibilidade à ferrugem. O IAC81-2004 também apresentou bons resultados, caracterizando-se como precoce, com bom teor de fibra e boa resistência à broca-do-colmo. Em condições naturais de campo, porém, sua desvantagem é a grande incidência de "chicotes" de carvão. Apesar de ambos os clones apresentarem características agroindustriais vantajosas, desaconselha-se que sejam incluídos no estudo de manejo parietal para outras regiões paulistas, em função dos problemas fitossanitários citados.

A number of sugarcane clones obtained in crosses made in 1980 and 1981, was tested in three locations with Oxisol soils at Ribeirão Preto region. The commercial varieties SP70-1143, NA56-79 and IAC64-257 were used as controls in trials and evaluated for agricultural and industrial traits on the average of three harvests. The best clone in the experiments was IAC80-2094, which has been indicated for early harvest period with good yield and fiber content, but with heavy tasseling and susceptibility to rust. Other early maturing clone was IAC81-2004, which showes good fiber content and stem borer tolerance, however it does show, in natural conditions in the field, frequent symptoms of rust. Thus, in spite of both clones show superior agricultural and industrial traits, these problems of diseases above mentioned do not recommend their inclusions in the varietal management for other regions in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
